Light of the World / The Stronger Man

The Light of the World Jesus presents himself as a guiding light to reveal to us who The Father is, Who He is, and who we were made to be like. This claim shatters all darkness, and when we rest in Him, and choose to follow Him wherever He takes us, we live in The Light. Many of you have heard the phrase "Shine Light in the darkness, and the darkness will be no more." I hear the Lord whispering these words to me over and over and over and over again today. Lord would you be my pillar of fire, my guiding light. Would you take away the darkness, as I can not. Amen. The Stronger Man I listened to this sermon while feeling extremely weak. Jesus, The Stronger Man, destroys the weaker powers of this world, which we so often ignore. The great insight that we still live in a spiritual world where dark forces are constantly attacking us is so important. How often our society, and ourselves, ignore that fact! But Jesus is the stronger man, and the forces of darkness are no ma...

Light of the World

If we stay in the light of Jesus, we do not walk in the darkness of the will of God. Some days I dislike that God doesn't reveal to us his complete plan but other days I love it. So much of college is based around planning. Planning your classes, meetings, social events, studying, etc. That is why it feels so nice to know that God has a plan for us and he will reveal each step of that plan when it is time. All we have to do is stay in the light and trust in Jesus. It's honestly really exciting and motivating. I think now especially is when we have to be in the light of Jesus as a team so we know who God wants as next year's leadership team. I think now especially is when we have to be in the light of Jesus as a society so we can have comfort that this quarantine will not last, and life will continue on. I pray that we all can walk in the light of Jesus and that God will give us wisdom and discernment throughout every activity of our lives.

Light of the World

When we live in the darkness amidst own selfish ways, it only leads to “confusion, tripping, aimlessness, etc.” and creates an invitation for evil or wickedness to take over. The total absence of light is deceiving, but Jesus makes a powerful claim that He is the only one who can overcome this. I like how DJ explained that Jesus “ pierces  the darkness because He is the light.” This indicates Jesus is not just a dull candle-like flicker, but rather a bold, eye-catching light. (think: LED colored flashing lights bc it’s always a party when we see Him) He brings us clarity in what we long to be: someone who lives by faith and trusts his father. He also exposes us of the terrible truth: we are ruthless sinners. …but because of His love for us, His light cleanses and heals us. Amazing! He brings form, color, and texture to what we couldn’t see in the darkness; He brings an accurate reality and depiction of what we were hiding behind and who we were hiding from for so long. ...

Stay close to The Light

What a blessing it is to learn more about who Jesus is everyday. Something that really stuck with me this morning is that our ideas about who God is are not God. So let's not begin with us, let's begin with Jesus. DJ talks about how Him as Light both gives us reason to want to run toward and also run from Jesus. In the Light, we feel at home, we see everything we long to be... but His Light also reveals the darkest corners of our lives. Nothing can be hidden. We can see more clearly the places where we don't live up to the model that Jesus sets for us as humans. We see this, and we get to this shame, the kind that Michael talked about at Greek Row a couple nights ago, the type of shame that has made me, personally, draw back into the shadows before, away from His Light. But the funny thing about God is that you can't really hide from Him. Even when you think no one's looking or paying attention, God is there with you. And even when you think you're com...

Bread of Life

To be reminded of the story of the Israelites and God’s offering of the manna as they were wandering in the wilderness allows me to reflect on a few ideas and themes in my own relationship with Him: 1.       Discipline/ Devotion : Am I going out every day to receive the bread of life? Noticing a deep desire to be in relationship with God is a good measure to point out a habit of coming. Those who keep coming to the bread of life understand the nourishment and goodness, which makes us want to come back. 2.       Trust : Am I trusting that God will provide? Taking more bread than told like the Israelites, shows that I am more concerned with how I want to satisfy myself rather than letting God satisfy me. 3.         Recognizing God : Am I recognizing a greater reality that God is near? Seeing signs (such as the raining down of manna) but not noticing them as ways in which God extends His love on us m...

The Bread of Life

Darrell points out that we live in a world which believes in "The myth of Scarcity". This idea that there is nothing that can ever satisfy the world and our human hearts - a total lie. I often seek to fill my heart with bread of this world, and continue to hunger and thirst. I pray that I could continually remember The One who satisfies me, and the rest of the world. Keep coming, keep coming, keep coming! "When we find ourselves hungry, we can tell we are out of the habit of coming to The Lord Jesus" This reminder that each day we need to fill up not on things of this world, but on Christ alone, brings me great Joy. The Lord continually provides for us all that we need. Each day, hour minute, may I feast on The Bread of Life. I need You more than I need my next meal, Jesus!!! Amen

Let's get this bread!

Let's get this bread! or rather let's get his bread!! I was humbled by this sermon by being reminded that the biggest need we have in life is the bread of God. Lately, I have fallen into the trap of trying to convince myself I need AirPods and other material items, giving it a lot of thought and my time. It is refreshing to hear that the things of this world are not needs but wants. I pray I remember every day that there is no higher need in this world but a relationship with the living God. The God of miracles and the God who put his life down for us all. We talked about multiplying last meeting and what greater example than seeing God multiple the bread and fish for the many. Let's give him what little rations we have and watch Him multiply it!
