The Wonderful Lamb of God

After listening to this sermon, one thing I realized is that I have never previously taken the time to pray or reflect on John 1:29, "Behold, the Lamb of God who takes the way the sin of the world!". This prayer is said during Catholic mass, but has power behind that prayer has never struck me as it did after this sermon. Below are some of the notes and ways I felt God was speaking to me during the sermon.

In the spirit of being disciplined in discipleship by exploring the question "Who is Jesus", there seems to be no better place to start than with John the Baptist. I can barely imagine the wisdom that God must have given John to even from a young age to witness the holiness Jesus portrayed. The pastor pointed out that John the Baptist sees Jesus as one who has existed from all eternity and he ventured forth to be a preacher to the greater one to come after him, for all to LOOK and make straight the path for Jesus. In John's great belief, he utters that Jesus is the "Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world".

In this John the Baptist's statement, I was first drawn the pastor's explanation of world. John did not just say to take away the sin of Israel, but the world, implying everyone on this earth. The whole world was to be saved by the Lamb, Jesus Christ. In the most basic sense, Christ's love is universal and has no boundaries. As for sin, I was intrigued to think about how human self-centeredness and control are a catalyst for feeding the universal addiction to self that strays us away from Jesus. Thinking of taking away, as a result of Jesus' commitment to His Father's will, He picked up our sins and carries them so we no longer live in condemnation. As for the Lamb of God, I struggled at first in understanding all the versions of Lamb but loved the explanation that Jesus was the one ultimate sacrifice that all the other pointed to. Christ upon the cross can say "It is finished" because His Father's will has been completed and condemnation no more.

We are so lucky to be able to yield our everything to Jesus and His victory over death, He is truly the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.
